The Internal Security Forces General Directorate reported Friday that ISF units launched a crackdown against violations in Tripoli, within the framework of a security day across the northern region.
The security forces set up checkpoints on al-Mallouleh – al-Tebbaneh Bridge, in al-Bahsas area and within the vicinity of the Quality Inn hotel, where they verified the identities of the citizens and arrested a number of fugitives.
The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.
But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.
