State Commissioner charges Roumieh prisoners and guards over rioting
The State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr charged on Friday several prisoners and guards in two riots carried out by inmates in the Roumieh prison last June.

Judge Saqr charged 56 prisoners with forming a gang in one of the prison blocs, smuggling mobile phones and narcotics.

The charges also mention rioting in the bloc and attacking guards.

Saqr issued charges against 32 policemen for negligence and for not observing the activities of the inmates.

The judge also charged 31 prisoners and four security officers in the juvenile bloc for respectively carrying out riots and ransacking the facility, and for dereliction of duty.

Roumieh is Lebanon's largest prison and has long been notorious for the poor conditions in some of its blocs.
