Military Court Judge Dany Zeani charged on Wednesday hardline Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir with the formation of terrorist cells across the southern Lebanese city of Sidon as well as the attempted assassination of political and religious figures and instigating attacks against the Lebanese Armed Forces. Judge Zeaine referred al-Assir to the first Military Investigative Judge according to the articles 335, 549 of law number 549/201 of the penal code and the articles 5 and 6 of law number 11/1/58. The Internal Security Forces’ General Directorate arrested on Saturday (August 15) fugitive cleric Ahmad Al-Assir, wanted for being involved in the deadly clashes that resulted in the deaths of 19 army troops. Security officials said Assir was arrested at Beirut International Airport as he was attempting to flee the country in disguise, using a forged passport, adding that he attempted to flee towards Nigeria via Cairo.
