Interior Minister Mashnouq orders security officials “to protect” Sunday’s protest
Minister of Interior Nouhad Mashnouq gave on Saturday his orders to top security officials to "protect" Sunday's scheduled anti-government protest by preventing riots.
"Protests and freedom of expression, under the ceiling of law, is a right guaranteed by the Constitution," Mashnouq noted during a security meeting he chaired at the ministry.
But he stressed that any act of public freedom shouldn’t undermine the country’s security, risk the safety of security personnel in charge of protecting the protests, or damage public and private properties.
Activists have called for a march from Bourj Hammoud to Nejmeh Square Sunday at 5 p.m., to demand the resignation of Mashnouq following the use of excessive force by security forces against protesters during a protest that took place on Wednesday.
