Reactions to Abed al-Wahed’s killing

In a chain-reaction triggered by the murder of Sheikh Ahmad Abed al-Wahed and his bodyguard Sheikh Mohammad Hussein Merheb, President Michel Suleiman praised the national role played by the army across Lebanon, noting that the loss fall on the army and Akkar’s residents who constitute the main support for the military institution and sacrificed their lives to preserve the dignity of their nation.

Former PM Saad Hariri received a phone call from the head of the National Struggle Front MP Walid Jumblatt and they discussed exerting efforts to prevent the North and Lebanon from falling into strife. For his part, Hariri called President Michel Suleiman and LAF leader Jean Kahwaji and asked them to conduct an immediate investigation in the circumstances of the crime and t take the appropriate measures against those held responsible.

The head of the Future bloc Fouad Siniora said we cannot remain silent over the incident that led to the death of Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahid and the circumstances must be unveiled as soon as possible. Siniora called for an immediate and fast investigation, through an independent judicial investigation committee.      

In a statement issued by Dinniyah Sheikhs, they denounced the killing of Sheikh Ahmad Abed al-Wahed in Akkar and they demanded the arrest of the perpetrators and those who stir strife against the national Sunni community.       

Akkar Mufti and Sheikhs said that they will not allow anyone to stir a strife between the citizens and the army, calling for a general strike on Monday across Lebanon.

Akkar MPs called, after their meeting, on President Michel Suleiman, PM Najib Mikati and the army to take all the relevant measures against the officers and soldiers who committed this crime. They also demanded the formation of a Parliamentary investigation committee, adding that those who gave the orders bear the responsibility for the incident.

MP Khaled Daher accused the army of the murder, noting that blocking the roads does not serve the interest of the people and they will be reopened soon.

MP Ahmad Fatfat told LBCI that it is unacceptable to consider that the crime was an accident. Fatfat called on President Suleiman and the Army Command to address this issue and intervene as soon as possible.

MP Hady Hbeich told LBCI that the army’s act who performed in an unacceptable way and he will not accept that the shooter will conduct the investigation.

The Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea called for an immediate investigation into this crime, adding that we must not fall into strife even if it was revealed that an error was committed by army members.
