Rifi to LBC: The prison situation will worsen
Interior Security Forces (ISF) Commander Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi described the situation of Lebanon’s prisons as a time-bomb ready to explode, on Monday. “If the situation in the Lebanese prisons remains unchanged, the crisis will worsen”, Rifi told LBC TV station.

Rifi added that no one is waiting for a radical or immediate solution that will fix the prisons’ problem, noting that the cost of such a solution could reach $14 million.

“The previous government had allocated $5 million to rehabilitate the prisons”, Rifi said, calling on Mikati’s cabinet to earmark $9 million to improve the prisons’ situation.

“The work needed to improve Roumieh prison has been identified, and a map of a court room that will be built to try Islamist inmates has been drawn and will be ready within 4 months”, Rifi stressed.

According to Rifi, the implementation of the prisons plan will cost around $2 million.
