Official sources in Beirut told Acharq al Awsat daily that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) submitted a list of the indicted in the assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri to the Lebanese authorities.

The list included the names of: Mustafa Badreddine, Salim Ayyash, Hussein Oneissi and Assad Sabra. The STL requested that the list be published along with the pictures of the accused and the charges held against them in the Lebanese press.  

The sources added that the list release is a routine procedure, and provides another method of serving notifications to those accused that, based on information received by the STL’s president, have not yet been found by the security forces.

The notifications explain to those accused how they can get in contact with the STL’s concerned chambers and plead not guilty. The notifications stress that if the accused choose not to appear before justice, they will be tried in absentia.

A judicial source told the newspaper that the subsequent procedures taken by the Hague-based Court signal that public trials are just around the corner.

Acharq al Awsat learned from attorney Mohammad Mattar, who is representing former PM Saad Hariri, son of deceased Rafik Hariri, that he offered his services personally to both Saad and the families of Rafik Hariri’s companions.

The daily quoted Mattar as saying: “Ever since we submitted our request to participate in the trial’s proceedings, we have played a key role in the case. The statement issued by Judge Daniel Fransen is a reminder of the remarks that he made soon after the indictment was released and aims at prompting the victims to speed up submission of their requests.”
