Information Minister, Walid Daouk, convened Friday with the National Media Council and representatives of audio-visual media with no measures or actions taken against media institutions. Once the session ended, Daouk stated that several mutual points between the media institutions and the National Media Council were agreed upon. He added that he understands the pressure that the media institutions go under while covering political and security situations. Daouk stressed that this meeting’s purpose is not to judge or hold accountable the media institutions, but it is instead an auto critic to define how media should cover these incidents. For his part, president of the National Media council, Abdel Hadi Mahfouz, said that August 15th, the day on which the 11 Lebanese detainees in Syria were reported dead, was a “dark doomed day”. “The media institutions have already expressed their apologies”, he added. In this context, media institutions will be holding a meeting in the beginning of the upcoming week to ensure the respect of the media law. For the full LBCI report, please watch the video above.
