France regrets political debates sparked by Rai’s position

Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai met Wednesday with French ambassador to Lebanon Denis Pietton in Beirut to discuss the recent developments in the region.

As Pietton left Bkirki without making any statement, the French embassy stated later that France describes the political debate that followed Rai’s visit to France as lamentable and unjustified. The French embassy confirmed that the solid ties between France and the Maronite church and Lebanon as well remain unaffected by this recent storm.

The French Embassy explained that Rai’s visit was an opportunity for him to meet with top French officials to discuss the situation in Lebanon and the region as well as the Syrian events and the repercussions they could have on the Middle East minorities.

The French embassy added that the visit was part of a tradition that reflects the firm ties between France and the Maronite Patriarchate which it described as “a significant reference for Lebanon”.
