Fatah al-Islam’s escape attempt turns into hostage situation
Peace prevailed again in Roumieh prison after a clash had erupted Friday morning between the Fatah al-Islam detainees and ISF members.

The officers were transporting a number of the detainees to another cell block after the security apparatus were briefed on a possible escape attempt.

Seventeen injured inmates were taken to Dahr al Bashek hostpital while ten ISF members received treatment at Abou Jaoude hospital under heavy security.

The detainees held hostage twelve ISF members before negotiations resulted in the freeing of the ISF members. The incidents echoed inside the prison as well as outside so that it could be heard by the families of Fatah al-Islam who held a sit-in outside the mosque of the Bekaa town of Majdal Anjar to protest the injury of the prisoners.

Lebanon’s prisons, notably Roumieh, are witnessing clashes and escape attempts increasing in frequency and until now all measures and promises to stem this phenomenon have been futile.
