Sehnaoui to LBCI: There will be no settlement on the data issue

“Those who obtain the ‘secrets’ of Lebanese politicians, spiritual leaders and military persons place the entire country under an oppressive grip.”                 

Those were the words of the Minister of Telecommunications Nicolas Sehnoaui during a phone interview with LBCI during Nharkom Said and in response to a question regarding the issue of the telecommunication data.                    

Sehnaoui stressed that there would be no compromise on the data and no middle ground however added that the Minister of Interior Marwan Charbel is exerting efforts to safeguard the privacy of citizens. Sehanoui said that the Minister will be requesting details on the movements of communications without their content and will only demand content upon finding suspicious leads.                       

Sehnaoui clarified that the concern lies within protecting citizens’ privacy, stressing that the request of the security apparatuses in its current form is completely unacceptable whereby it called for the revealing of all information pertaining to citizens’ communications.
