Qabbani regrets division among Islamic body

Grand Mufti Mohammad Rashid Qabbani announced on Monday that when he called for electing a new Higher Islamic Council, he was simply exercising his powers.

Qabbani who met with Former PM Salim El Hoss to discuss this issue, stressed that the current council’s mandate ended three years ago and was extended 3 times.

The mufti added that the members of the council have requested an additional extension for one year but later withdrew their demand under the pretext of objecting the error in the call for elections. In this regard, Qabbani criticized the members and “some of the politicians they refer to”.

According to Qabbani, the council lost its powers when its mandate ended, emphasizing that he does not wish to extend his own mandate and those who are promoting this rumor are “liars”.
