Electoral sub-committee concludes its meetings, no consensus reached

The parliamentary sub-committee looking into electoral draft laws convened on Saturday for the last time.

Following the meeting, the MPs held a press conference and explained the position of each political bloc they are representing.

MP Robert Ghanem said that the discussions were based on the hybrid electoral formula proposed by Speaker Nabih Berri, stressing that of the meetings' report will be submitted to Berri who will in turn refer it to the joint parliamentary committees.

Future bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat affirmed that Kataeb’s electoral proposal is a good pillar to reach understandings, revealing that there is still room for consensus. However, he confirmed that his bloc is sticking to former PM Saad Hariri's proposal.

According to MP  Serge Torsarkissian, the hybrid electoral law achieved a semi-victory and all the discussed draft laws revolved around the mixing between the majoritarian and proportional representation systems.

Torsakissian added that both hybrid and Orthodox Gathering electoral proposal will be discussed Monday during the meeting of the joint parliamentary committees.

FPM MP Alain Aoun stated: "We did not reach a consensus but it is not the end of the world!"

Earlier, Speaker Berri called on the joint parliamentary committees to convene on the 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st of February in order to discuss the electoral proposals.
