Patriarch Rai warns from Arab situation slipping into extremism

Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai warned that the Arab situation might slip into extremism. “If a civil war erupts between Sunnites and Shiites in Iraq, we will not witness an Arab spring, but an Arab fall”, he said.

Rai hoped, from New York, that religion and the state be separated both in the Arab spring and in Lebanon. He voiced his fear over extremists rising to power.

The Patriarch said that Christians in Syria are protected and live in peace, adding “Syria needs constitutional reforms”.

Rai stressed that the Church is not biased and does not refuse any regime, calling on the church to respect the dignity of the human being, no matter what his religion is.

“It is unacceptable that Muslims live in hate of Christians in Egypt”, he said, unveiling phone calls with Pope Shenouda III to hold a spiritual summit in Lebanon.
