REPORT: 60 students poisoned in Tripoli's Abi Samra

More than 60 students, less than 12 years of age, have been admitted on Thursday to Tripoli's Dar Al-Shifaa Hospital after suffering severe cases of vomiting, stomach ache, and short breath, the state-run National News Agency reported.       

In further details, the students who had been being admitted to the hospital since 9:00 am come from one of the public schools in Tripoli's Abi Samra locality. They are said to have drunk poisoned potable water. Immediate measures were taken at the hospital to treat the children.

The children will be subject to a 24-hour observation," the Doctor on duty said, asserting that there is no danger on their health.            

Later, the Lebanese Health Ministry issued a statement whereby it stressed that the Ministry’s epidemiological surveillance department followed up on the poisoning cases among the students, noting that examinations are underway to reveal the exact causes of the incident in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Water.           

In this context, caretaker Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil ordered the ministry’s officials in the North to coordinate with the hospitals in order to provide the patients with the required treatment.

In a similar case in the South in May last year, a teacher and several students from the Shebaa public school suffered from food poisoning due to a lunch they had during a school trip.
