Lebanese PM announces plans to visit South Lebanon to unveil package of reconstruction projects

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said he visited the northern city of Tripoli on Monday to show solidarity with residents following a building collapse and to push for a comprehensive solution to the problem of structurally unsafe buildings across the city.

In a post on X, Salam said his visit aimed to send a clear message that “Tripoli is not alone,” noting that he chose to conduct an on-site inspection ahead of a scheduled meeting later in the day at the Grand Serail to discuss long-term measures to address deteriorating and cracked buildings.

Salam also said he visited survivors in local hospitals to check on their health following the collapse, which has once again raised concerns about aging infrastructure and poor building safety standards in Lebanon’s second-largest city.

The prime minister added that his thoughts were also with South Lebanon, which he said continues to face ongoing Israeli airstrikes. He announced plans to visit the south in the near future to meet residents and to unveil a package of reconstruction projects that will begin as soon as possible under a World Bank loan.
