Geagea: Judiciary linked to Syrian opposition kidnap

Lebanese Forces Leader Samir Geagea urged President Michel Sleiman and PM Najib Mikati on Tuesday to intervene immediately to end the abduction of Syrian opposition members.      

Geagea said that “kidnapping Syrian refugees is not permissible, be they opposition members or pro-Assad.”      

Following his meeting with Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin, Geagea disclosed security reports that reveal the involvement of certain security apparatuses in the abduction, as well as implicating prominent judicial authorities such as the Public Prosecution Department.      

Zasypkin, in turn, stressed the importance of giving priority to security and stability in Lebanon to avoid a fate similar to the Syrian’s. He also reiterated Russia’s support for the STL and international legitimacy, calling for the redoubling of efforts to find a solution to the funding issue.        

Commenting on the concerns expressed by French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe on how events in Syria may affect Lebanon, Geagea voiced his views on how Lebanon can handle the situation. The LF chief said that the state should fulfill its duties by controlling the border and treating the Syrian refugees according to international standards.        

Turning to political issues, Geagea urged the cabinet to resign since “it serves only the resistance’s interests”.
