REPORT: Syrian foreign minister meets Iran's Zarif in Tehran

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Wednesday (August 5).

Moualem also met Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Shamkhani.

The Syrian minister arrived in the Iranian capital on Tuesday (August 4) for talks on efforts to end the civil war in his country.

Discussions on Wednesday focused on the fight against Islamic State militants.

Syria supported any efforts to combat the Islamic State if they are coordinated with Damascus but anything else would "be a breach of Syrian sovereignty", Syrian state television quoted Moualem as saying.

The United States said this week it had decided to allow air strikes to defend Syrian rebels trained by the U.S. military from any attackers, even if the enemies were the Syrian army and allied fighters.

Iran and Russia have stood by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, providing military and financial support during more than four years of the conflict.

The United States and some of its Gulf Arab allies have said Assad must leave office.

World powers led by the United States reached a nuclear agreement with Iran on July 14 but both sides have made it clear that the deal will not change their policies in the region.

Moualem on July 24 reiterated his government's view that Iran's support for Damascus would continue after the deal.
