Number of asylum seekers in EU increased by a third in 2021
According to a report issued by the European Asylum Agency (EASO) , the number of asylum applications to European countries increased by a third in 2021 compared to the previous year, excluding the 3.4 million Ukrainian refugees who have flocked to the EU this year and granted special status.
 
The agency's Executive Director Nina Gregory delivered the annual report and noted that "there are three main drivers for the increase in these numbers: the Belarusian regime's exploitation of migrants, the Taliban's ascent to power in Afghanistan last summer, and of course the war in Ukraine."
 
At the top of the list came the Syrian asylum seekers (117 thousand), followed by Afghans (102,000), Iraqis (30,000), Pakistanis and Turks (25,000 alike), and Bangladeshis (20 thousand).
