REPORT: Assad's government involved in Hariri's assassination- The New Yorker

      
The New Yorker magazine reported that prosecutors of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon "have convincing evidence that the government of Syrian President Bachar al-Assad is involved in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, in 2005".            

Dexter Filkins, the author of the investigative report, quoted a senior investigator for the Special Tribunal as saying that there was also reason to suspect an Iranian hand in the operation.            

“Our theory of the case was that Hezbollah pulled the trigger, but could not and would not have done so without the blessing and logistical support from both Syria and Iran," he said.           
Filkins also quoted the same investigator as saying that one of the phones believed to have been used by the perpetrators had made almost a dozen calls to Iran before and after Hariri's assassination.             

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set up by the United Nations at the Lebanese government's request to try the alleged perpetrators of the 2005 bombing in which former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others were killed.
