REPORT: Chinese couple sell their daughter for iPhone

Chinese media reported that an unemployed Chinese couple will face criminal punishment for "selling" their infant daughter and using the proceeds to pay for an online shopping spree, including the purchase of an iPhone.

Shanghai’s Jiefang Daily newspaper reported that the couple, identified as Mr. Teng and Ms. Zhang, began posting online adverts for the child in June this year.

According to the newspaper the adverts suggested they would be willing to part with their unborn baby in exchange for up to 50,000 yuan (£5,070).

After a home birth, designed to cover-up the crime, the couple handed over their baby girl and received a large cash payment into their bank account.

The couple told prosecutors that their main aim was their daughter’s best interests, pointing out that they hoped to place her with a financially stable family who could provide her with an education.

The newspaper quoted the couple as saying “We did not give away our baby for money but in order to give her more security.”
