President Michel Sleiman met on Tuesday at the Baabda Palace with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati , and discussed with the security situation in the northern city of Tripoli.

As well, President Sleiman and caretaker PM Mikati were briefed by Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Jean Kahwagi over the implementation of the security plan in Tripoli.

This comes as Lebanese Armed Forces Units deployed in Tripoli's Syria Street which separates the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.        

Cautious calm prevailed overnight on the axis of both regions and clashes eased after intensive contacts were held with the concerned authorities in order to ensure the army's deployment in Syria Street.             

Fighting resumed on Monday in the northern city of Tripoli between gunmen of rival Lebanese sects where at least 12 people have been killed since last week.

The latest round of fighting that began ten days ago in Lebanon's second largest city has also wounded more than 60 people, officials said.

Gunfire could be heard in the Bab Tabbaneh district, which is largely Sunni Muslim, as Lebanese Army convoys patrolled the streets in armored personnel carriers (APCs).

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli. These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.

Tensions had been mounting since 14 October, when a Lebanese military prosecutor pressed charges against seven men, at least one of whom was from Jabal Mohsen, for their involvement in twin bombings near two Sunni mosques in Tripoli on 23 August that killed 47 people.
