REPORT: Caretaker PM Mikati: Bashir's statements are "punishable by law"

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati warned on Saturday the Higher Relief Council's chief that the “random accusations” Ibrahim Bashir voiced on Friday "are punishable by law."

In an open letter, Mikati said that Bashir's statements contradict with the regulations that govern the work of the HRC.

On Friday,  Bashir had denied that he has embezzled USD 10 million from public funds, accusing the caretaker premier and the cabinet's secretary-general of trying to “eliminate him.”

Mikati noted that the council of ministers' directorate-general and its secretary-general will take the necessary “legal and judicial measures and procedures against Bashir.

Mikati stressed that a copy of this “warning” will be sent to the Public Prosecution, along with Bashir's statements, to be investigated.
