REPORT: Islamic Action Front official killed in Tripoli

Two unidentified assailants, riding a motorcycle in the region of al-Bahsa in the northern city of Tripoli, opened fire Tuesday at the Islamic Action Front (IAF) official Saadeddine Ghiye who was inside his vehicle, leaving him with a gunshot wound to the head.

Ghiye was rushed to Zgharta hospital for treatment, where he later succumbed to his wounds.

In this context, sources reported that Ghiye had been the target of an attempted assassination before, noting that he had survived a bomb car attack.

The reports say soldiers have deployed to the area to prevent fighting following the attack.        
However, sources said that Sheikh Ghiye was a member of the Muslim Scholars council, denying that he was an official in the Islamic Action Front.
 
Sectarian clashes linked to neighboring Syria's civil war have long plagued Tripoli, where residents are bitterly split between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. Clashes have killed scores so far.

The Bab Tabbaneh district is largely Sunni Muslim, as are Syria's rebels. The Jabal Mohsen neighborhood is dominated by residents of Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite offshoot.
