REPORT: Shiites around the world mark Ashura holiday

Shiite Muslims around the world marked the Ashura on Thursday, the annual commemoration of the death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

The Imam was killed in the seventh century at the Battle of Karbala, in present-day Iraq - a key moment in the split between the Sunni and Shiite sects of Islam.

Hundreds of thousands of Shiite Muslims flocked to Iraq’s Karbala on Thursday, home to a shrine to Imam Hussein, marking the climax of the ten-day-long religious festival.

The festival in Iraq was met with attacks carried out by the Sunnis who call the Shiites heretics.

In the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Sadar City in Baghdad, details of the battle in which Imam Hussein was killed were re-enacted in a street play.          

Security was stepped up across Afghanistan as Shiites Muslims there marked the Ashura by beating themselves with chains and knives.

The holiday was also marked in Iran, Yemen and Bahrain where clashes erupted with police officers.
