REPORT: Jabal Mohsen residents protest attacks targeting them in Tripoli

Residents of Tripoli’s Jabal Mohsen held a demonstration on Friday to protest the attacks that are targeting citizens from the mentioned region, calling on Lebanese authorities to interfere in order to maintain security at the northern Lebanese city.

Demonstrators called on Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, House Speaker Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam to protect the Alawite sect as well as all residents of Jabal Mohsen.

The media official of the Arab Democratic Party Abdul Latif Saleh told LBCI on Thursday that 4 employees in Tripoli's municipality were shot near the Taqwa mosque.

The employees were identified as: Wissam Fares, Mohammad Saleh, Said Issa and Haidar Souto.

Later in the day, the “Military Committee of the Families of the Tripoli Blasts Victims” claimed responsibility for the shooting at Jabal Mohsen’ residents, stressing that it will continue its operations until the prosecution of the head of the Arab Democratic Party Ali Eid and the party’s Secretary General Refaat Eid.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli. These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
