REPORT: Slain Lebanese politician Mohammad Chatah laid to rest

Slain former Minister Mohammed Chatah and his bodyguard Tarek Bader were laid to rest on Sunday near the graveyard of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in Beirut downtown amid popular attendance.

This as former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said that march 14 alliance will be not "fearful of the killers."

Siniora asserted that March 14 alliance decided "to liberate Lebanon from the illegitimate arms in order to protect its independence and freedom."

For his part, Mufti of Tripoli and the North Sheikh Malek al-Chaar slammed during Chatah's funeral all forms of violence, noting "that justice will be victorious at the end."

He also stressed that efforts will be deployed in order to build a "united" country, adding that the new government will be formed to deal with the Lebanese people's issues.

This as President Michel Sleiman decorated posthumously assassinated former Minister Chatah the insignia of the National Order of the Cedar, Officer Grade.

Caretaker Minister of  Displaced, Alaaeddine Terro, placed the medal on the coffin of the slain minister.

Earlier, the coffins of  former Minister Mohammed Chatah and his bodyguard Tarek Bader were transported from AUBMC to the Amin Mosque in downtown Beirut.

An explosion rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday, December 27, targeting the convoy of former minister Mohammad Chatah.

Sources at the explosion site said Chatah was on his way to attend a meeting at Beit al-Wasat when the explosion occurred.

The sources added that the explosion was caused by a booby-trapped car, identified as a Nissan, which was parked only one hour before the explosion; however, in information made available to LBCI, the explosive-laden vehicle was identified as a Honda reported stolen in 2012.

The explosion in Beirut's Starco claimed the lives of 7 persons, including former minister Chatah, and injured 71 others.
