REPORT: Kahwagi: LAF's main objective is preventing spillover of Syrian crisis into Lebanon

Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Major General Jean Kahwagi said on Monday from Rome "the LAF's main objective is preventing the spillover of the Syrian war into Lebanon."

Kahwagi arrived on Sunday to Rome to meet with patriarch Bechara Rai and several officials.

LAF's Kahwagi pointed out that his visit to the Italian capital Rome is to tackle the bilateral ties between the army of the two countries, in particular before the conference which is set to be held in Italy to support the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Asked about the Saudi donation to the Lebanese army, Kahwagi asserted that the donation is on “the right path.”

Last December, President Michel Sleiman said that Saudi Arabia has pledged $3 billion to buy weapons from France to help support and strengthen the Lebanese army.

"Saudi Arabia is giving the Lebanese army $3 billion in aid," Sleiman said, calling it the largest grant ever given to the country's armed forces.
