REPORT: Cardinal Rai calls for eradicating the phenomenon of kidnappings in Lebanon
President Michel Sleiman held a meeting on Sunday with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai at Saint Joseph monastery in Jrebta.

During his sermon, Rai stressed that the Lebanese people are suffering from poor security, the phenomenon of kidnappings, and the spread of weapons.

He called on all concerned parties to eradicate the kidnap phenomenon, mainly after the attempt to kidnap The pastor of Baalbek-Deir al-Ahmar Semaan al-Asmar.

The pastor of Baalbek-Deir al-Ahmar escaped a kidnap attempt on Saturday evening in the Bekaa.

Rai's comments were made during a celebratory mass at the monastery for the Centennial Jubilee of Saint Rafka.

For his part, President Sleiman said that Lebanon is in dire need of setting a defensive plan to protect the country.

He also noted that he will deploy outmost efforts to hold the presidential elections in their due time in order to restore democracy in the country.

President Michel Sleiman’s six-year term in office ends on May 25, but there are fears that the differences between the March 8 and 14 camps would lead to a vacuum in the country's presidency.
