REPORT: Mortar shells hit Syrian capital, near Russian embassy

A monitoring group said on Saturday that mortar shells hit several areas of the Syrian capital, with one hitting near the Russian embassy without causing injuries.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said Syrian regime troops battled rebels in eastern Ghouta near the capital, while opposition forces tightened their siege of a military base in Idlib province of northwest Syria.

The Observatory also reported fighting between regime troops and rebel forces in the area around Babuleen, which opposition forces captured on Friday.

Their advance has allowed rebel forces to tighten a siege of the Wadi Deif army base, one of the regime's last major posts in Idlib.

More than 150,000 people have been killed in Syria's three-year-old civil war, the Observatory said this week. More than 2.6 million people have fled Syria as refugees and another 6 million have been internally displaced by the violence.
