REPORT: President Sleiman from Bkerke: Presidential void is unacceptable
President Michel Sleiman reiterated on Sunday the need to attend Wednesday's parliamentary session tasked to elect a new president.

He also called on Lebanese leaders to  implement the Lebanese Constitution, adding that presidential void is unacceptable.

Sleiman's comments were made at Bkerke prior to the Easter mass where he  noted that the important matter is the stances taken by the upcoming president and not if he was consensual or affiliated in a certain party.

He hailed the presidential program submitted by Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, adding that he won't benefit him as he can't vote and is going home on May 25.

As for the relation with Hezbollah, he said that he has normal ties with the party, adding that democracy relies in having different point of views.

For his part, Patriarch Bechara Rai said that the word " vacuum" shouldn't be mentioned cause its similar to death.

Prior to the mass, Sleiman held a behind-closed doors meeting with Patriarch Rai.

This as sources told LBCI that Speaker Nabih Berri and former Prime Minister Saad Hariri held separate telephone conversations with Rai  over the presidential elections.

President Michel Sleiman's tenure ends in May, but the constitutional period to elect a new head of state began on March 25.

Heavily influenced by the war in neighboring Syria, and host to more than a million refugees, Lebanon has struggled to control a deterioration in security and an economic slowdown.

In February, Lebanon formed a new government, breaking a 10-month political deadlock during which a caretaker government with limited powers was in charge.

Many Lebanese hope that a working government and the election of a new president will bring stability and leadership.
