REPORT: Hezbollah delegation meets Patriarch Rai in Bkerke
A Hezbollah delegation held talks on Friday with Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Rai in Bkerke.

The delegation included Hezbollah's politburo chief Sayyed Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyed and members Ghaleb Abu Zainab, Mustafa al-Hajj Ali and member of the Muslim-Christian Council Hareth Shehab.

The meeting comes in light of Rai's scheduled trip to the Holy Land and fears of presidential vacuum at the country's top Christian post after political leaders failed to reach consensus on a candidate.

Following the meeting, Sayyed Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyed voiced hopes that Rai would take into consideration Hezbollah's stance on his visit to Jerusalem. Rai is expected to travel to Jerusalem to welcome Pope Francis during his visit to the occupied Palestinian territories on May 24-26.

Lebanon remains technically at war with Israel and bans its citizens from entering the Hebrew state. Rai would be the first patriarch to travel to Israel since the Jewish state was created in 1948.

On another note, al-Sayyed stressed that Hezbollah would head to parliament to elect a new president If there is an agreement among the different factions on one presidential candidate.

The lawmakers’ continued failure to elect a successor to President Michel Sleiman raises fears over a presidential vacuum after the expiry of his six-year term on May 25.
