REPORT: Iraqi captives appear shot at by gunmen - purported ISIL stills
Pictures distributed on a purported Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant Twitter account from Salahuddin province on Sunday (June 15) appear to show dozens of men lying on the ground as gunmen aim weapons at them execution-style.

Reuters is unable to independently verify the content of these images, which have been obtained from a social media website without a date or location given.

"This is the fate of the Shi'ites which Nuri brought to fight the Sunnis," a caption to one of the pictures reads. Other captions say the captives were army deserters detained as they tried to flee the fighting.

Men are seen crouching and with their hands on their heads before lying in a line in an open field with guns pointed at them by masked gunmen. Some stills not in this edit also show men being shot in more graphic detail. In several pictures, the black Islamist ISIL flag can be seen.

Most of the captured men were wearing civilian clothes.

The Twitter account was suspended approximately 10 hours after the images were posted.

ISIL fighters and other Sunni Muslim armed groups have stormed several towns on the road to Baghdad after seizing Mosul nearly a week ago - an offensive which only stalled as it approached the mainly Shi'ite capital.

The insurgent offensive that has threatened to dismember Iraq spread to the northwest of the country on Sunday, when Sunni militants launched a dawn raid on a town close to the Syrian border, clashing with police and government forces.
