REPORT: Speaker Berri defers election session till September 2 for lack of quorum

Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Tuesday the session tasked to elect a new president until September 2 for lack of required quorum.

Lebanese Forces MP Elie Keyrouz called on rival Christian sides to respond to the calls of Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai and facilitate the election of a new president as soon as possible.

In turn, Kataeb party MP Elie Marouni voiced regret over the failure to elect a new president, saying that he had pinned hopes that lawmakers' national conscience would awaken following the latest security developments in the country.

Prior to the session, Change and Reform bloc MP Abbas Hachem told LBCI that the return of former Prime Minister MP Saad Hariri to Lebanon reactivated political life, voicing his hopes that a new president would soon be elected.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum after Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.

Prior to today's session, nine electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.
