REPORT: Speaker Berri reiterates rejection to the extension of parliament's mandate
Speaker Nabih Berri reiterated on Wednesday his rejection to the extension of the parliament's mandate.

"The extension of the parliament's mandate proved pointless," Berri was quoted as saying.

Berri also stressed that he agreed with former Prime Minister Saad Hariri on the importance of electing a new president as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, Speaker Berri deferred the session tasked to elect a new president until September 2, for lack of required quorum.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum after Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.

Prior to Tuesday's session, nine electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.

Last year, the parliament extended its mandate to November 2014 citing security reasons as the motive.
