REPORT: Jreissati says granting tenure to all EDL workers violates basic rules and regulations

Former Labor Minister Salim Jreissati said on Monday that calls to grant full-time employment to all Electricite du Liban contract workers violate the most basic rules and regulations.            

"What has been agreed upon regarding the EDL workers was endorsed by the parliament and doesn't need further explanation," Jreissati said in a press conference at the Ministry of Energy.         

He also slammed the EDL contract workers for shutting down Lebanese public institutions and urged them to reconsider their "reckless" decisions.        Electricite du Liban contract workers closed on Monday the gates of the institution and prevented employees from entering the building in Cornishe al-Nahr.        

In the southern city of Tyre, the workers also shut down the institution's gates and denied access to employees in spite of attempts by the security forces to reopen the gates.        

Also on Monday, two EDL workers attempted to set themselves alight but were prevented from doing so.          

Electricite du Liban contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries.          

Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
