REPORT: Nazarian accuses Justice, Interior ministries of inaction over EDL dossier

Minister of Energy and Water Arthur Nazarian said the Electricite du Liban institution is "occupied" by EDL contract workers, accusing the Justice and Interior Ministries of inaction in this regard.

The minister's statements were made in a press conference from the Zouk power plant after a meeting with the company's board of directors.

"The inability to issue bills due to the occupation of the central building will take its toll on the employees' salaries and will overburden the citizens with higher bill payments," he said.

"The abnormal and continuous sit-ins staged by EDL workers inside the institution will entail dire repercussions," Nazarian said, noting that the workers' movements will plunge the country into complete darkness due to the reduction in productivity.

He also stressed that the law “prevents anyone from occupying a state institution,” adding that the company's Director General Kamal al-Hayek is ready to engage in a dialogue with the EDL workers.

EDL contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries.

Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
