REPORT: Sources to LBCI: Interior Ministry suggests reorganizing squatter refugee camps
A ministerial committee tasked with following up on the affairs of refugees in Lebanon has tackled the establishment of informal camps for the displaced Syrians.      

The committee convened at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam and in the presence of Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil and Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbass.      

In this regard, sources told LBCI that a meeting was held late on Monday at the Interior Ministry in the presence of representatives from the three mentioned ministries and others from the General Security.        

The officials stressed that there was no chance of establishing camps at the Arida and Abboudyeh crossing points, citing security and logistic reasons, the sources said.       

The attendees also said it was not appropriate to set up camps at the Masnaa crossing point for security reasons.        

In this context, the Interior Ministry submitted a proposal to reorganize squatter camps in a bid to settle the file of the displaced Syrians, the same sources added.        

Lebanon, an overburdened and under-resourced country, has been grappling with the rising influx of Syrian refugees.          

More than one million refugees from Syria are now registered in Lebanon. The number is expected to reach 1.5 million by the end of 2014.
