REPORT: EDL contract workers threaten to kill themselves over delays in salary payments

Two Electricite du Liban contract workers threatened on Monday to kill themselves outside the Royal Tower building near the EDL institution.

One of the EDL workers threatened to set himself alight while another wielded a knife and deliberately injured himself.

A meeting held earlier between the EDL committee and one of the service provider companies did not yield positive results.

Lebnan Makhoul, the Head of Electricite du Liban contract workers committee, told LBCI that salaries are a "sacred right" to the workers, slamming delays in salary payments.

EDL contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries.

Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
