REPORT: Minister Abou Faour describes conditions of wheat silos in Beirut as appalling

Minister of Agriculture Akram Chehayeb stated on Tuesday that the state of hygiene and cleanliness at the wheat silos inside the Beirut Port is catastrophic, stressing that this situation should be addressed at the soonest possible.

For his part, Health Minister Wael Abou Faour noted that “Lebanese citizens are sharing wheat with rats and pigeons,” noting that reforms carried out in the recent past are not enough.

He also stressed that the dossier of the Beirut Port will be referred to the judiciary, “because all parties responsible for this chaotic situation should be held accountable.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Economy Alain Hakim emphasized that the situation at the wheat silos should be immediately addressed; pointing out that cooperation is ongoing with Ministers Abou Faour and Chehayeb in order to resolve this matter within 10 days.

Health Minister Wael Abou Faour along with Economy Minister Alain Hakim and Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb toured on Tuesday the port of Beirut and inspected the wheat silos.

While touring the port, Minister Abou Faour and Chehayeb were trapped inside one of the elevators for almost 20 minutes due to a technical failure.
