REPORT: Lebanon officials mark St. Maroun Day, underscore need to elect president

Prime Minister Tammam Salam reiterated on Monday the importance of electing a Lebanese president, saying “we hope a new head of state is elected to put an end to the power vacuum and revive the country’s institutions”.

PM Salam’s statements were made upon his arrival to St. Maroun church in Gemmayze where Lebanese lawmakers, ministers and other figures celebrated a mass on the occasion of St. Maroun's holiday.

Former President Michel Sleiman - whose term ended in May last year – also attended the mass and called for the election of a new head of state the soonest possible.

“All Lebanese parties are responsible for the implementation of the constitution without any procrastination,” Sleiman said, adding “it is shameful to summon ambassadors to intervene and elect a president on our behalf”.
