REPORT: TV producer Charbel Khalil appears before public prosecutor amid protests
Lebanese TV producer Charbel Khalil on Monday lashed out at lawyer Tarek Shandab who accused him of insulting Islam, saying “Shandab has an Islamic State ideology”.

“Had Grand Mufti Abdel-Latif Derian saw the [controversial] photo I shared on my Twitter page, he wouldn’t have filed a complaint against me,” Khalil told reporters who gathered outside the Justice Palace.

In turn, Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said Khalil submitted all documents that prove his position and his respect to all religions.

Investigations with director Charbel Khalil wrapped up on Monday with the interrogation being referred to State Prosecutor Samir Hammoud to decide on the case.

Shortly before Khalil’s hearing session, Lebanese citizens, actors and civil society organizations gathered outside the Justice Palace to express solidarity with him. He appeared before public prosecutor Nada al-Asmar.

On Thursday, MP Ibrahim Kanaan said he was ready to defend Charbel Khalil in court if the judiciary prosecutes him over accusations that he defamed Islam in a Twitter post.

Lebanon’s Grand Mufti Abdel-Latif Derian contacted Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi Wednesday to request an investigation into Khalil’s intentions, and Dar al-Fatwa sent a notice to the State Prosecution Office on Thursday for the same purpose.

Meanwhile, Lebanese lawyer Tarek Shandab filed a lawsuit against Charbel Khalil, representing 70 religious and civic figures, accusing the TV producer of insulting Islam.

The controversy flared up over a post Khalil shared on his Twitter page nearly a week ago.

According to a judicial source, the picture shared by Khalil shows a veiled woman wearing a short dress and sitting on a bed covered with black sheets on which the Islamic slogan “There is no god but God and Mohammad is his Prophet” is written.

It was the latest of the numerous controversies that have erupted over posts or sketches by Charbel Khalil who directs “BasmatWatan,” the longest-running political satire program in Lebanon that airs on LBCI.
