REPORT: Labor Minister says CDL settlement won’t last unless framed in reform project
“The solution that was brokered over Casino Du Liban (CDL) sacked employees dossier has won the blessing of all parties including the Board of Directors, Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh and both staff unions at the casino,” Labor Minister Sajaan Azzi said on Friday.       
 
In a press conference, Minister Azzi also said “the sacked employees will receive the financial compensation that was agreed upon,” urging them to reject all attempts to reduce it “or else the Labor Ministry will intervene anew in this case”.        
 
“The settlement at the casino cannot last unless it is framed in a reform project,” the minister added, calling for a clearly-defined system that runs financial and employment affairs.        
 
CDL employees who were laid off from the country's main gambling center resumed their movement on Monday (March 02) and headed to the casino where they met with the Board Chairman to tackle the latest developments regarding their case.            
 
Lebanon’s renowned casino had issued an administrative decision to lay off 191 employees, triggering demonstrations outside the establishment.         
 
Casino du Liban’s administration said it was seeking to resolve accumulating financial and administrative woes and ensuing changes would necessitate a temporary halt in salary raises and promotions and would also urge strict monitoring of production and efficiency.  
 
As per the aforementioned decision, the administration announced that it would nullify the contracts of 191 employees who are “absent [from work], undisciplined, unorganized and unproductive.” ​
