REPORT: Lebanon’s Interior Minister oversees security operation at Roumieh prison
Interior Minister Nohad Mashnouq arrived Monday to the Roumieh prison to follow up on the final stages of a security operation that began at the jail earlier in the day.
 
Earlier, the Lebanese security forces stormed, at around 6 a.m., Roumieh prison’s Bloc D in the wake of riots that have recently broke out inside the building.
 
As the Internal Security Forces’ Riot police units entered the prison, a number of inmates set their mattresses on fire in a bid to counter their move.       
 
In the same regard, security forces units managed, two days ago, to release twelve policemen and two doctors who were held captive by Islamist inmates at the Roumieh prison.        
 
The released hostages were handed over to a military official who headed to the prison on behalf of Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq.       
 
This comes a day after the Internal Security Forces’ Riot police units stormed Roumieh prison’s newly-rehabilitated Bloc D after inmates had set their mattresses on fire and taken hostage a number of guards.           
 
Five ambulances along with Red Cross medical teams arrived to the scene in anticipation of possible escalation.       
 
The riots, according to the inmates, come in response to overcrowding and the implementation of stricter regulations to prevent the smuggling of drugs and weapons to inmates at the prison.       
 
Roumieh prison, which has witnessed sporadic riots and jail breaks, holds almost 5,500 inmates and is known to be the oldest and largest of Lebanon's overcrowded jails.               
 
The prisoners have been able to communicate outside with mobile phones and security sources have said some are involved in attacks against the state.
