Speaker Nabih Berri said on Wednesday that he agrees with Change and reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun on a number of strategic issues and disagree with him on minor ones without specifying. As for the security appointments, Berri reiterated during his weekly meeting with MPs his support to the extension of the security leaders’ mandates to avert vacuum. Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum last year on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired. Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country. Electing a head of state would revitalize the role of state institutions in terms of administrative appointments.
