REPORT: Riots reported at Roumieh prison
Riots were reported on Tuesday at the Roumieh prison bloc A where a number of inmates, including drug dealers from the Chamas family carried out the insurgencies.
 
This as Minister of Interior Nouhad Machnouq dispatched his adviser for prison affairs Major General Mounir Chaaban to resolve the issue.
 
Meanwhile, the Internal Security Forces Panthers Unit was sent to the Roumieh prison to interfere in case the security situation deteriorated inside the jail.
 
The violence comes days after videos leaked from inside the prison online depicted members of Lebanon’s Internal Security officers torturing Islamist inmates.
 
Last April, the Internal Security Forces’ Riot police units stormed Roumieh prison’s newly-rehabilitated Bloc D after prisoners had set their mattresses on fire and taken hostage a number of guards.  
 
The riots, according to the inmates, came in response to overcrowding and the implementation of stricter regulations to prevent the smuggling of drugs and weapons to inmates at the prison.
       
Roumieh prison, which has witnessed sporadic riots and jail breaks, holds almost 5,500 inmates and is known to be the oldest and largest of Lebanon's overcrowded jails.       
 
The prisoners have been able to communicate outside with mobile phones and security sources have said some are involved in attacks against the state.
