REPORT: Protesters reopen Jiyeh highway, 7 people wounded
Protesters reopened on Monday the Jiyeh highway following a pledge made by Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq not to transfer waste to Iqlim al-Kharroub region without a deal with municipalities.
 
Earlier in the day, three demonstrators and four policemen were wounded during a clash when police tried to force open the highway.
 
According to the state-run National News Agency, police used water cannons to disperse the crowd that pelted security forces with rocks, resulting in the injury of 3 protesters. 
 
Four other Internal Security Forces members were injured, the agency added.
 
Thousands of commuters were left stranded over the weekend due to the highway's closure, thus forcing security forces to divert traffic towards internal roads. The same scene was repeated during today’s morning rush hour.
 
The ISF said in a communique that the highway was reopened around noon Monday following efforts by Mashnouq to ease down street tension. 
 
“The waste will not be transferred and a landfill will not be set up in Iqlim al-Kharroub if no such agreement was reached with municipal chiefs and civil society representatives,” Mashnouq said in a statement.
 
Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill.          
 
The cabinet pledged last year that the said landfill would be shut down and an alternative site will be found. Nonetheless, no solution was reached thus far.
