REPORT: Judge Riad Abu Ghayda issues arrest warrant against hardline cleric al-Assir

Following the hearing session held by Military Investigative Judge Riad Abu Ghayda Thursday for arrested hardline Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir, and which lasted for three hours, an arrest warrant was issued against the latter.

Souces reported to LBCI that hardline cleric al-Assir supported Khaled Hoblos during the Bhanin clashes against the Lebanese Army.

Military Court Judge Dany Zeani charged on Wednesday (August 26) hardline Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir with the formation of terrorist cells across the southern Lebanese city of Sidon as well as the attempted assassination of political and religious figures and instigating attacks against the Lebanese Armed Forces.

The Internal Security Forces’ General Directorate arrested on Saturday (August 15) fugitive cleric Ahmad Al-Assir, wanted for being involved in the deadly clashes that resulted in the deaths of 19 army troops.

Security officials said Assir was arrested at Beirut International Airport as he was attempting to flee the country in disguise, using a forged passport, adding that he attempted to flee towards Nigeria via Cairo.
