REPORT: Salam appoints Minister Chehayeb to chair committee tasked with waste crisis

Prime Minister Tamam Salam tasked Monday Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb in place of Environment Minister Mohammad Machnouk as the head of the ministerial committee tasked with tackling Lebanon's pressing waste crisis.

Earlier today, Environment Minister Mohammad al-Mashnouq issued a statement, whereby he declared his withdrawal from the ministerial committee tasked with following up on the file of the waste management crisis.

“In light of the latest developments, especially the ongoing discussions over the treatment of waste, and since I believe there is an urgent need to find solutions that will make a breakthrough in the deteriorating situation that came as a result of the closure of al-Naameh landfill, and due to the failure of the political forces to find sanitary landfills, I have informed the prime minister of my decision to withdraw from the ministerial committee tasked with discussing the solid waste crisis,” the statement read.

He added that he tasked the PM with appointing whomever he deems appropriate for the position, while placing all the capabilities of the Environment Ministry at his disposal.
