REPORT: British PM Cameron: UK will continue to support Lebanon over the refugee crisis
Prime Minister Tammam Salam said on Monday in a joint press conference with UK PM David Cameron that Lebanon is bearing “a huge burden of hosting such a large number of Syrian refugees.”
 
Salam also noted that only a political solution in Syria would stop the influx of refugees to Lebanon.
 
For his part, UK PM Cameron stressed the need to elect a new president for the country, adding that the UK will continue to provide support to Lebanon in order to address the influx of refugees and to fight the Islamic State.
 
Cameron's several hour visit to Lebanon comes on the backdrop of the rise in the number of refugees fleeing to Europe to start a new life.
He said earlier this month that Britain will take in up to 20,000 refugees over the next five years.
 
Lebanon hosts more than 1.1 million Syrian refugees  equivalent to a quarter of the country's entire population.
 
But there are no formal camps here, so unofficial encampments have cropped up in fields or abandoned construction sites.
 
While somewhat better-off refugees find other accommodations, the poorest end up in the encampments, relying on U.N. cash and food vouchers to survive.
